Telecommunication networks

This curriculum covers the areas extending from the analysis (developed in theoretical, simulative and experimental way) aimed at designing and managing the modern telecommunication networks (fixed and mobile, circuit, cell and packet switched) to the typical issues of the interactive multimedia communications.

The academic board of the Ph.D. program will evaluate the background of the candidate and will formulate a specific programme in the disciplines listed below. To this aim, tailored courses, seminars and laboratory activities will be scheduled.

  • Network architecture
  • Switching systems
  • Signalling protocols and networks
  • Wireless networks
  • Teletraffic engineering
  • Discrete events simulation
  • Security in telecommunication networks
  • Routing in fixed and mobile networks
  • Voice over IP and multimedia over IP
  • Quality of service in IP networks
  • Mobility in IP networks
  • Multicasting in IP networks
  • Virtual private networks and traffic engineering in IP networks

Here are some of the subjects available for both theoretical and experimental research:

  • Network architectures for next generation Internet
  • Solutions for supporting quality of service in the Internet
  • Centralized and distributed systems for traffic measurement
  • Algorithms and systems for traffic control and management
  • Admission control and resource allocation techniques
  • Fast restoration techniques
  • Vertical handover between fixed and/or mobile networks (e.g. GPRS, UMTS, Wi-Fi)
  • Traffic characterization and measure-based techniques
  • Techniques for rare events simulation
  • Objective evaluation of quality of service

The curriculum is mostly related to the disciplines of the ING-INF/03 (Telecommunications) group of the act D.M. 04/10/2000 concerning the definition of scientific sectors of Italian university courses.
