History
|
The studies in the field of microwave and radio-frequency engineering and communication systems at the University of Pisa (founded in 1343 a.c.) started at the Institute of Electronics and Telecommunications, today Department of Information Engineering (namely, “Dipartimento di Ingegneria dell’Informazione: Elettronica, Informatica, Telecomunicazioni”, or DIIEIT).
Department
of Information Engineering (DIIEIT, via Caruso site)
The first at the head of the Department was Professor Ugo Tiberio, who carried out research activity on radar since early ‘40, leading one of the first radar prototypes ever built in the world. In 1961, the master of science (M.Sc.) degree in electronic engineering was established among the first in Italy. In 1989, the M.Sc. degree in telecommunications engineering with a curriculum dedicated to microwaves was also introduced.
The activities in the field of the modern microwave circuits design started in 1992 with several courses: Basic Electromagnetics, Microwaves, Electronics for Telecommunications, Electromagnetic Compatibility.
Currently, two research groups are active in the Department. The former is mainly focused on numerical methods for applied electromagnetics, electromagnetic compatibility, microwave circuits and antennas and it is directed by Professor Giuliano Manara.
The latter is focused on radio-frequency and microwave integrated circuits design for modern wireless systems. This research activity is carried out at the Radio-Frequency & Microwave Integrated Circuits Laboratory (RFLab) directed by Professor Bruno Neri.
