Giuseppe Barillaro is currently Associate Professor at the Information Engineering Department

of the University of Pisa, where he has been leading his own research group.


The primary research interest of Prof. Barillaro’s group is in the preparation of micro and nanostructured materials, devices, systems with applications in (nano)photonics, microelectronics, (bio)sensing, and (nano)medicine.


G. Barillaro is author of more than 300 scientific publications, among which 104 papers on peer reviewed international journals and 20 Patents (10 of which granted in USA, EU, CN).

Lucanos M. Strambini is permanent Researcher at National Research Council (CNR-IEIIT) of Italy.

He received the Ph.D. degree inInformation Engineering from the University of Pisa in 2007.


His main research activity deals with micro and nanostructured materials and technologies for sensing applications, with either electrical or optical approaches.

Researcher

Giovanni M. Lazzerini joined the group in 2006 as PhD student working on integrated gas sensors and sensing platforms using meso/nanostructured porous silicon. He got his PhD degree in Information Engineering from University of Pisa in 2010.

Dr. G. M. Lazzerini is currently with the National Physics Laboratory, which is the UK National Measurement Institute, and is a world-leading centre of excellence in developing and applying the most accurate measurement standards, science and technology available.

Margherita Bassu joined the group in 2007 as PhD student working on the fabrication of silicon microgrippers by electrochemical micromachining technology. She got her PhD degree in Information Engineering from University of Pisa in 2011.

Dr. M. Bassu is currently post doc researcher at the

Max Plank Institute for Biophysical and Chemistry.

Angela Longo joined the group in 2009 as master student. As Ph.D. student she carried out research within the project Glucose Monitoring in Diabetic Patients by Minimally Invasive Microsystem, funded by the Regione Toscana through National Health Program 2009.

She got her PhD degree in Information Engineering from University of Pisa in 2014.

Dr. A. Longo is currenly trainee at Baxter International Inc., a worldwide pharma company.

PhD Student

Salvatore Surdo joined the group in 2008 as master student. He got his Ph.D. degree in Information Engineering from the University of Pisa in 2012 working on the fabrication, modeling and characterization of photonic crystals for refractometric and biosensing applications. He spent two more year (2012-2014) in the group as post-doctoral researcher working on the fabrication of integrated optofluidic microsystems featuring photonic crystals for molecular and cellular biomedical applications.

He is currently post doc researcher at the Italian Institute of Technology in Genoa.

PhD Student

Michela Sainato joined the group in 2011 as Ph.D. student.

She got her Ph.D. degree in Information Engineering from the University of Pisa in 2015 working on fabrication and characterization of chemitransistor gas sensors based on nanostructured silicon for environmental monitoring.

She is currently post-doc researcher at the Molecular Foundry Berkeley Lab in USA.

Pantea Nadimi Goki was post-doctoral researcher in the group for two years (2013-2015) with a fellowship funded by the Italian Minister of University and Research within the research project Autonomous Real Time Embedded Multi-analyte Integrated Detection Environment - ARTEMIDE.

Her main research activity in the group concerned with modeling, simulation, fabrication, and characterization of integrated optical devices and systems for biosensing applications.

Letizia Ventrelli was postdoctoral researcher in the group (2014-2016) with a fellowship cofunded by the Tuscany Region and the Italian Minister of University and Research within the research project Autonomous Real Time Embedded Multi-analyte Integrated Detection Environment - ARTEMIDE.

Post doc Researcher

Valentina Robbiano was an Early Stage Researcher in the group (2015-2018) with a Marie-Curie fellowship funded by the European Commission through the H2020 ETN Synchronics (http://synchronics-etn.eu).

Her main research activity concerned with fabrication and characterization of photonic crystal structures, devices, and systems incorporating supramolecularly-engineered organic semiconductors for the realization of a novel class of photonically-enhanced (bio)chips.

Early Stage Researcher

Giovanni Polito was PhD student and postdoctoral researcher in the group (2013-2017).

He received both Bachelor and Master degree in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Pisa in 2010 and 2013, respectively. He joined the group in 2012 as master student and got his PhD from the University of Pisa in 2017.

His main research activity concerned with the development of microstructured inorganic/organic materials and their functional integration to get  platforms for sensing and biosensing applications.

Alessandro Paghi is a III year PhD student with a scholarship funded by the Italian Minister for University and Research (MIUR).

He received both Bachelor in Informatics from the University of Siena in 2016 and Master degree in Electronic Engineering from the University of Pisa in 2018. He joined the group in 2018 as master student.


His main research activity deals with the development of sensors and devices exploiting nanostructured materials for sensing and nanoelectronic applications

PhD student

Chiara Cozzi was PhD student and postdoctoral researcher in the group (2014-2018).

She received both Bachelor and Master degree in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Pisa in 2010 and 2014, respectively. She got her PhD from the University of Pisa in 2018.

Her main research activity dealt with the micro and nanostructuration of silicon and polymer for nanomedicine applications, among which liver-on-chip for long-term maintenance hepatocyte  and nanoneedles for cell programming/transfection.

Lorenzo De Marinis joined the group in September 2018 as a master student in Electronics Engineering, pursuing the fabrication of silicon-based nanolaser for his master thesis.

He received his Bachelor degree in Electronics Engineering from the University of Pisa in 2016.


His main research activity dealt with preparation and characterization of organic-inorganic nanostructured optical devices for low-threshold tunable lasing.

Master student

Rossella Iglio was PhD student in the group with a scholarship funded by STMicroelectronics.

She received both Bachelor and Master degree in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Pisa in 2011 and 2015, respectively. She joined the group in 2014 as master student.


Her main research activity dealt with microstructuration of polymers, as well as their decoration with nanosructured materials, aimed at the fabrication of novel sensors and biosensors.

Antonino Amedeo Lamattina (Nino) was a PhD student in the group with a scholarship funded by STMicroelectronics.

He received both Bachelor and Master degree in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Pisa in 2013 and 2016, respectively. He joined the group in 2015 as master student.


His main research actvity dealst with the development of electrical and optical minimally invasive biosensors.

Jose Gonzalez Rivera joined the group in November 2016 with a temporary researcher position at CNIT funded by REgione Toscana through the project ARACNE: ARA Cooperative Network, aimed at developing a miniaturized integrated platform for monitoring clinical parameters and environmental analytes in/around runners and bikers.

He received his PhD in Chemical Engineering from the
Guanajuato University, Mexico in 2013.


His main research activity dealt with synthesis and preparation of nanostructured silicon and silica for environmental monitoring nanosensors.

Martina Corsi is a  II year PhD student, with a scholarship funded by the Italian Minister for University and Research (MIUR).

She received Bachelor and Master degree in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Pisa in 2017 and 2020. He joined the group in 2018 as master student.


Her main research activity deals with the development of  biosensors exploiting nanostructured materials for biomedical applications.

PhD student

Stefano Mariani has currently a Postdoctoral fellowship funded by the European Community H2020 within the research project JU ECSEL R2POWER300.

He received the Ph.D. degree in Chemical Sciences from the University of Florence in 2015. He joined the group in 2015 as postdoctoral researcher.


His main research activity deals with fabrication and surface modification by suitable chemistry of photonic crystals and other integrated devices for molecular biosensing applications.

Postdoctoral Researcher

Adriana Vicari is a I year PhD student with a scholarship funded by abmedica s.p.a. She received Bachelor and Master degree in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Pisa in 2018 and 2021. She joined the group as a  master student in 2020.



Her main research activity deals with the development of structures and systems for biomedical applications using nano and microstructured polyemers.

Caterina Rosellini joined the group as a  master student in Pharmaceutical Technology, working on her master thesis on a biomimetic liver on chip for drug toxicity screening.



Her main research activity dealt with the technology and characterization of a biomimetic hepatic lobule, hepatocyte culture, and drug toxicity screening.

Master student

Francesco D’amico joined the group as a  master student in Electronic Engineering, working on his master thesis on photonic crystal micromirrors with extralarge bandgap for nanophotonic applciation.



His main research activity dealt with the technology and characterization of 1D photonic crystal mirror operating over the whole VIS range.

Master student

Samuele Corso joined the group as a  master student in Biomedical Engineering, working on hid master thesis on stress/strain sensors using porous PDMS.



His main research activity dealt with the technology and characterization of microstructured porous PDMS decorated with conductive nanofillers for stress/strain monitoring of physiological signals.

Master student

Elena Maurina is a I year PhD student with a scholarship  funded by the Italian Minister for University and Research (MIUR). She got her Bachelor and Master degree in Chemistry and Physical Chemistry from the University of Pisa in 2019 and 2021, respectively. She is a student of the Scuola Normale Superiore (SNS) in Pisa.


Her main research activity deals with polymer technology for the fabrication of biodegradable sensing materials and devices for biomedical applications.
